How To Brew Oolong Tea

Image of various types of loose tea

To brew Oolong tea you will require two tea pots. One is called the sharing pitcher or Guywan and is used to share out the brewed tea into tea cups ready for drinking and the other is actually where you will leave the tea leaves to steep.

  1. Step 1

First you will need to wait until the water reaches the boil. Once the water has reached this point you will need to pour a little out into the Guywan tea pot. This initial water will warm your tea pot and you can use it to warm your tea cups.

  2. Step 2

Now fill the other teapot with 1/4 full of Oolong tea leaves. Over these leaves you will pour more water. Immediately you should pour the now infused water into your Guywan (where you filled a little water to warm the tea pot). You will not be drinking this initial first brew. Instead you must throw this brew out.

  3. Step 3

While you are performing these initial steps in brewing Oolong tea you must have some more fresh water on the boil. This additional water will be required in the further steps later on.

  4. Step 4

When brewing tea (Oolong Tea in particular) you will need to awaken the tea leaves - this was carried out in the step where you poured boiling water over the tea leaves and then discard that infusion - the tea leaves will have opened and the full flavor of the tea has been released. At this point you are ready to start brewing tea. Once your second pot of water has reached the boil, pour this water over the prepared leaves. After 10 seconds of steeping time have passed you will need to pour this infusion into the sharing pitcher.

  5. Step 5

It is only once the tea has been poured into the sharing pitcher that you will pour it evenly into all of the ready warmed tea cups.

The interesting aspect about brewing tea, like Oolong tea, is that you can make many infusions of tea with the same tea leaves that you already have in the second tea pot just by adding more fresh boiling water. The different flavor from the resulting infusions will provide you with different dimensions of taste each time.

Silver Tips

  • When boiling water for tea one point that you will need to remember (for any tea) is that using pre-boiled (previously boiled) water will make your tea taste flat. This is because during the boiling process the water would have lost most of the oxygen already.
